   <subfield code="a">Student athletes are considered a unique subpopulation of university students.  They face added demands from their sport, compared to the average college student.  Research indicates that student-athletes from certain sports and with certain types of motivational constructs are more prone to underachieving in their studies compared to others.  This study has two general objectives: 1) to examine the motivations of student-athletes in high-profile sports and their impact on academic and athletic performance, and 2) to compare these constructs between males and females.  Using the Achievement Goal Theory as the framework of this study, multiple linear regression was conducted to determine which motivational orientations predict academic performance.  Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was also utilized to determine the differences in motivational orientations, based on athletic performance and to compare the variables between sexes.  Findings revealed that academic and athletic motivational orientations were significant predictors of academic performance.  However, certain athletic orientations (Mastery-Avoidance and Performance-Approach) were found to be the strongest individual predictors.  As for athletic performance, almost all constructs had no significant differences, save for one athletic orientation (Performance-Avoidance).  Finally, female student-athletes were found to have statistically higher grades and have no significant differences in motivational orientations as compared to their male counterparts.</subfield>
