   <subfield code="a">This thesis is on the experiences of members of the varsity sports program of a University with an absentee parent who is an Overseas Filipino Worker.  The study looked into the specific experiences of athletes themselves in order to understand their whole story from their side and draw evidence-based conclusions that may be a basis to address difficulties or issues regarding their situation.  Convenience sampling was used to get participants.  Three boys and one girl who were part of a University's Varsity sports program were involved in the focus group discussion.  Using a thematic analysis, results show that the perceived impacts mentioned were: growing awareness of financial responsibility, becoming more emotionally vulnerable to the OFW parent, neglect for the OFW parent when they visit the Philippines, academic motivation, and athletic motivation.  The common coping mechanisms mentioned were: eating (substance abuse), alcohol (substance abuse), friends (use of emotional support) spending time alone (behavioral disengagement), and romantic relationships (use of emotional support).  The coping mechanisms unique to students-athletes with OFW/absentee parents the participants mentioned were the use of instrumental support, sport as a coping mechanism/exercise, and getting used to the situation (acceptance).  Findings of this study show that the participants mentioned more positive than the negative impact of the absence of their parents.  Findings also show that the coping mechanisms commonly identified were aligned with some of the subscales of the Urdu Brief COPE by Carver (1997).  The results also indicate that coping mechanisms identified by the varsity members were positive ways to cope.</subfield>
