The difficulties encountered by researchers with government publications partly arise from the fact that government agencies in the Philippines often change names. This study tries to solve that difficulty by creating a Name Authority File for Philippine Government Names that will link these names, and provide historical notes and references. This study is an attempt to create an authority file of selected Philippine Government corporate names of the Executive Branch from the department level to the bureau level, covering the years 1946 to 2007. The departments are: the Office of the President, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Budget and Management, the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Finance, the Department of Health, the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Social Welfare and Development and all the bureaus under each of them. Eight online catalogs of the following institutions were used for this work: the British Library Integrated Catalogue (BLIC), the Dela Salle University WEBOPAC, the Libraries of the University of Hawaii System, the Library of Congress Online Catalog, the MIRLYN Library Catalog of the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and Flint, the Ohiolink Library Catalog, the Orbis Yale University Library Catalog and the University Library of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. From the data gathered from the internet and from the assigned online catalogs, a data sheet was created for each department or bureau. This sheet was filled out with the form of heading, history of the department or bureau, the related names and the variant names. Thus, this sheet contains all recorded past and present names of each department or bureau. Using the cataloging rules of AACR2 for Corporate Name Headings as guide, a list was made from the data gathered from the Internet, from the online catalogs and from the data sheet. The resulting output is a proposed name authority file for departments and bureaus of the Executive Branch of the Philippine Government. It is hoped that the proposed authority file will serve as a starting point for achieving consistency and uniformity of name headings used for Philippine corporate names, particularly of the agencies of the Republic of the Philippines.
