   <subfield code="a">The study explores a comparative description of the employment status and benefits among non-teaching librarians, teaching librarians, and regular faculty.  Using a selected number of four Metro Manila universities, University of the Philippines, Philippine Normal University, University of the East, University of Santo Tomas, and three respondents each from the three respondent categories mentioned, a total of 36 respondents answered the questionnaire asking them on aspects of their employment status and benefits enjoyed.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">The study found out differences in work status and benefits enjoyed among all respondent categories - but also similarities in terms of equal access to the benefits.  among the more prominent differences were:- Number of years in present position,- Starting salary range,- Hours of work reduced in case of regular faculty,- Deloaded teaching units upon assumption of administrative tasks by regular faculty. Flexitime work schedules among teaching librarians and regular faculty,- Access to professorial chairs, sabbatical leaves and research grants open only to regular faculty and to a lesser extent to teaching librarians,- Local conferences given to all respondents but foreign conferences only enjoyed by teaching librarians and regular faculty,- Outside invitations as resource speaker, lecturer and trainor given to regular faculty than to teaching librarians and non-teaching librarians',- Rooms/cubicles provided to regular faculty, to a lesser extent to teaching librarians, but least to non-teaching librarians. Nevertheless, all respondents tended to share equal access and receive equal preferential treatment in the following aspects of work status:- Non-teaching librarians allowed overtime than did teaching librarians and regular faculty,- Non-teaching librarians availed more of sick leaves, vacation leaves, emergency leaves and special leaves,- Scholarships, awards and promotions equally provided,- Attendance to local conferences equally accessible and open to all,- Appointments to university committees as chair or member and to head university offices/units given to all,- Housing application grants and per diem allowance provided to all respondents.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">The study concludes that these differences are part and parcel of the whole existing system or culture of ideas, values, attitudes, habits of mind and preferences on what a librarian's and what a teacher's role and place in a university.  But this culture is inherited from the past.  The librarians need not worry on how to overcome the work status inequities and have equal access to other benefits provided to employees in the university.  They have a strong ally in the information technology (IT) revolution.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">The study, therefore, recommends that librarians themselves acquire, through their own efforts, resources and initiative, IT skills and knowledge.  By so doing the librarians will be able to break out from the confining shell of an old image and be seen anew as professionals with IT skills, IT experts and consultants.  Through such sheer effort, librarians will get status, recognition, and his/her services as IT agent and communicator will be much sought after. Trainings that librarians must attend need not be in IT topics only.  For complete professionalization, trainings must include management, leadership, workplace relationships, ethics, library services, and inter-library cooperation and exchange. Librarians need to actively participate in university activities to be recognized and respected.  University leadership must, on the other hand, recognize the merits of librarians and harness them in other university activities such as the open university for distance education purposes. For a full-scale investigation of the subject, a follow-up study may be needed with an expanded coverage, a bigger sample of respondents nationwide so that findings will be generalizable to the whole population of academic librarians and regular faculty members.</subfield>
