It was conducted from July 3 to August 25, 2000 during the first semester of AY 2000-2001. Structured guides were used to interview ten respondents for the study. The respondents included online editors, IT consultants and UP professors who specialize in technology. Secondary sources such as financial statements and company profiles were also analyzed. The profitability of the online newspapers was measured in terms of company assets and liabilities, the viability of present income sources according to IT experts and statistics that define the present and future Internet environments. The study shows that profit was a motive for putting up the online editions of the newspapers studied. At present, most of the online editions are costs-centers for their print parent companies. They are nevertheless maintained because presence in the Internet gives a competitive edge and markets the print edition, makes the newspaper global and prepares the newspaper for the "wave of the future." Poor telecommunications infrastructure and unreliable cyberspace security hamper the growth of the Internet economy in the Philippines. However, the country is slowly acknowledging these concerns with concerted government and private efforts to support the new technology. To succeed online, newspapers must employ the same rules as traditional businesses. They must be creative, customer-oriented and responsive to the environment. The study shows that online newspapers have the potential to become profitable . In the Philippines, the success of online newspapers depends on the ability to build a loyal community that will use their sites regularly. Ultimately, this community could be could be realized only if "life gets better for the Filipino." NO - Vita. KW - Online journalism : Philippines. ER -
