Description
Summary:"TV Patrol", the television news program with the largest viewership in the Philippines, was qualitatively analyzed using the case study methodology and within the parameters of the theories on Mass Media and Society, in order to determine the factors that shape and influence its news production. The conduct of the research process and the findings consequently generated, all served the terminal goal of media education and media literacy. The news production process of "TV Patrol" was documented through a three-day immersion and interviews with pertinent individuals involved directly or indirectly in the process. File footage and first-hand experience harnessed from the immersion, and key statements from the respondents interviewed, provided the dimensions of the mold by which the daily news is shaped by the popular evening newscast. These dimensions were found to be the factors of advertising, economic considerations, human relations, and the subjective powers of the key participants of the process. An in-depth exploration of each of the said factors was essayed through the analysis of three "TV Patrol" episodes, coupled with concrete and illustrative cases, as revealed by the respondents. It was discovered that the factors mentioned above affected the news in various extents and degrees. Advertising and economic considerations were found to be more paramount and its implications more blatant, due to the inherent political-economic structure of mass media. Human relations and the subjective powers of the key participants in the process can be regarded as subtler and less obtrusive in its means, albeit no less pervasive and significant in the construction ofthe news by "TV Patrol".
