   <subfield code="a">The study describes the commuting experiences of students of a state university in the Philippines and its perceived effect on quality of life. This is a qualitative study involving 30 UP Diliman undergraduate students who do public commuting daily and whose travel time from school to home is at least 30 minutes. Content analysis was used to analyze the narratives of students gathered through interviews. Students view daily commuting in both objective and subjective aspects. Student commuters described commuting as stressful, tiring, time-consuming and exhausting due to their objective commuting experiences of inconsistencies and uncertainties in travel time, mode of transport and travel route brought about by an inefficient transportation system. The students also have generally negative subjective commuting experiences involving conditions of travel environment, mode of transport, driver behavior and traffic. Students reported negative effects of commuting stress to the social, productivity, health and safety aspects of their quality of life. The perceived effect of daily commuting can be moderated by having an experience that exceeds ideal expectations or an unusual heart-warming event during travel as well as those that present the worst conditions of travel. In dealing with public commuting everyday, students employ adaptive strategies by doing entertainment, self-care, social and productivity activities while in transit. Results show that students adaptive strategies can be improved through time management and proper utilization of available resources.</subfield>
