<subfield code="a">"This study is aimed to find out how did the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippine Star portray the Sultanate of Sulu in the Sabah Crisis which started last February 12, 2013 by analyzing the historical and cultural background provided in the articles published by the two newspapers. Content analysis was employed in the 200 stories that appeared within three months of the said incident from February to April 2013 in the headlines section of each publication's online news websites. Quantitative and qualitative methods were both used to collect the data needed. The historical and cultural backgrounds gathered in the articles were studies and the number of incidences pertaining to stereotypes such as the use of words related to violence was also tallied. The amount of spaces allocated to air the sides of the different parties involved were further noted as it was deemed crucial in determining if the reports published were balanced. A manual analysis of other factors important to the study such as the use of overly-emotional words and aggressive terms was also conducted. From the data gathered the conclusion that the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippine Star were not able to provide the right amount of historical background with only 17 out of 100 Philippine Daily Inquirer articles and 7 out of 100 Philippine Star articles included such context, most of which were only about two to five sentences and usually stating the same information. As for the cultural background, only the mentioning of the Sultanate's former social system and the idea that for the Tausugs, honor could be considered more important than life were presented in the articles analyzed. The coverage of the two newspapers further perpetuated Muslim stereotypes with the existence of derogatory words such as the tagging of the royal army as "terrorists" and excessive focus on violence. The use of emotional quotations from the representatives of the Sultanate only made them appear as if their claim was baseless and the whole Sabah incident was nothing but an irrational act of terrorism. Recommendations were also provided in the end such as the deployment of more reporters who are better equipped with the right knowledge about the Muslim community, additional interviews from reliable sources such as Islamic professors and history experts to allow more depth and analysis to the stories and finally, the use of infographics and interactive programs to make the presentation of events more interesting and easier to grasp for the readers."</subfield>
