Description
Summary:"This study aimed to identify the new formats of today's Philippine TV documentaries. It also aimed to critique the way these new formats treat and repackage meanings, stories, and social issues. The research was guided by Theorist Jean Baudlrillard's postmodern and semiotics theory. Through textual analysis of the three episodes of two contemporary television documentary programs, GMA's Reel Time and ABSCBN's Storyline, the researcherwas able to identify new documentary format concepts, including content and technical treatments. Understanding the goals and objectives for these new formats were achieved by interviewing creators and producers of the two documentary programs. Determining the general effects of these changes in formats was done by comparing the results from the textual analysis and one-on-one interviews. This research revealed that conceptualization of these new contemporary documentary programs' concepts was a reaction to the existing traditional style of documentary-making in the Philippine television. This study also gave in-depth description and critique of the new technical treatments' packaging of the content tackled by the documentary. The primary findings of this research are the following: (1) New documentary formats are conceptualized to start a revolution in the documentary-making process in Philippines television, (2) Hybriding cinematic language to television documentaries provided polysemous packaging of meanings and story-telling which allows viewers to have different interpretations, and (3) That these contemporary television documentaries formats gave birth to a new breed of audiences which consume critical and artistic documentaries. The study highly suggests follow-up researches on television documentary programs which may include in-depth study and examination of how a case study is represented in a "film-treated" documentary using the theory of Representation and Framing as primary lens. The study also highly recommends studying contemporary documentaries from the point of view of the audience. Audience reception research of this topic could supplement this study."
