   <subfield code="a">Post-earthquake damage surveys and previous researches report that in the event of strong earthquakes, destruction of non-structural components (NSC's) amounts to 65-80% of damage costs and may lead up to 25% of all earthquake-related fatalities. The National Structural Code of the Philippines (2015) provides overly-conservative NSC design force equations, and so proper implementation of these provisions needs to be emphasized. Moreover, designing appropriate restraints of NSC's implies the need for an efficient method that can estimate the floor accelerations of buildings. This study presents a method to evaluate floor accelerations of multi-story buildings subjected to horizontal ground motions, and investigates the behavior of NSC's located at different floor levels of the building. Floor accelerations were estimated by using floor magnification factors derived from the simulation of numerical building models, with varying damping ratios, subjected to harmonic ground excitations and earthquakes. Floor magnification factors were derived using the trends exhibited by the accelerations of the top floor, and were then used to interpolate the accelerations at intermediate levels. These factors are based on force transmissibility and capture the effects of higher vibration modes and transient response, and are expressed in terms of the damping ratio, the fundamental frequency ratio, and the number of floors of the building. Analysis of several building models show that, for buildings with low damping ratios, the proposed floor magnification factors provide very good approximations for harmonic ground excitations, as long as the dynamic response of the structure is dominated by the first mode of vibration. Furthermore, the estimated floor accelerations can be used to assess the stability of NSC's, thus determining whether or not restraints are needed. This study recommends that further studies on floor magnification factors, in buildings subjected to earthquakes, be conducted in order to propose equations that take into account building damping ratio and earthquake parameters such as frequency content.</subfield>
