Estimation of pollution load and assessment of water quality in San Cristobal river basin using geographic information system (GIS)

LLDA water quality data at sampling stations within San Cristobal river basin were assessed and compared with the water quality guidelines under DENR Administrative Order No. 2016-08 "Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards of 2016". Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Ammonia, Nitr...

Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Ammonia, Nitrate and Phosphate are the water quality parameters considered. For 2017, these parameters consistently failed to conform with the guidelines except for Nitrate. Contributions of industrial, domestic, agricultural, livestock and solid waste in the total pollution load were estimated using unit load approach. Domestic waste showed the highest source of pollution. Actual data from LLDA monitoring activities and Industry Self Monitoring Reports were used to estimate pollution load from industrial effluents and the output was compared to the pollution load using emission factors of the LLDA Waste Load Model. The enormous difference in the result can be attributed to the high values of emission factors and the limitations on the number of industry category. The spatial profile of water quality, sources and amount of pollution load per barangay were presented in maps using Geographic Information System (GIS). Barangay Canlubang was the biggest contributor of pollution in the San Cristobal River Basin. The pollution load in the San Cristobal River was estimated using water quality data and Stream flow measurement and compared with the maximum allowable daily load to determine the amount of pollution needed to be reduced to attain Water Quality Guidelines.
