   <subfield code="a">For Catholic Filipinos, it is undeniable that Santos have been a part of our Rich Artistic Patrimony and Religious Heritage. During the Pre-Colonial period, the natives of the archipelago have long been able to express their faiths and beliefs - one of which was by carving their idols, called larauan or lic-ha. When the Spanish came into the islands and brought with them their religion of Roman Catholicism ultimately ridding of all the traces of Pre-Colonial beliefs, the Filipinos did not find it difficult to accept this new religion, particularly the carving of Santos, as it simply picked up where their carved idols left off. The first half of the study focuses on how the Tradition of Santo Making has evolved in the country since it started in the Spanish Occupation and how it continues to survive and be passed down from generations. The research will look into the changes in tools, techniques,processes, and materials in favor of modern methods - whether the Tradition is preserved, condensed, and forgone. In order to find out the extent of these changes, this study was conducted by way of immersing in the community of Santo makers in Paete, Laguna for four days, interviewing and conversing with woodcarvers of religious items, of which would be recorded and analyzed, in order to find out how the tradition of Santo making continues to be passed down. The processes, tools, machines, techniques, and materials used by these Santo makers will also be observed and noted down. The results of this investigation have shown that while the method of carving Santos is still generally traditional, woodcarvers have accepted certain technological innovations and machines, giving them speed and efficiency. Having coexistence between new modern technology and the old tradition allows woodcarvers to heedfully answer to the demands of the evolving market. With these findings in mind, this brings the study to its second half where it was discovered that the tradition of Santo making in Paete is not well known despite its colorful history and longstanding heritage, not unless one is a collector who makes commissions to have a Santo made, or a member of the clergy, such as parish priest, who has religious statues made for a church. Because the location of Paete is secluded and far from the urban centers, people may most likely be unaware of the tradition's existence. Those with purchasing power, such as collectors living in the urban centers may not be knowledgeable about the tradition because they live are disconnected from the local and folk culture. Thus, the researcher presents 'LILOK', a documentary on the tradition of santo making in Paete, Laguna. The documentary is captures the entirety of the process of Paete santo making and is seen through the eyes of the wood from being taken from the forests of Real, Quezon to the processes of carving, smoothing, and finishing of the sculpture, up to the point where the sculpture is claimed and taken to the owner's home. This documentary is an effort for Filipinos to learn more about the tradition, aimed at heightening understanding, interest, and support for this cultural heritage.</subfield>
