   <subfield code="a">This report proposes a design for a plant producing diisopropyl ether (DIPE) that is technically sound and economically viable. This project also aims to provide a new, efficient and more effective process in the production of 29 000 metric tons (MT) DIPE per year using acetone feedstock and employing a gradient reactor. Diisopropyl ether is an ether fuel oxygenate commonly produced from the hydration and etherification of propylene. However, the plant will be utilizing a new process: a single stage catalytic synthesis of DIPE from acetone. The most commonly used oxygenate is the methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), which is, however, being phased out due to its negative environmental impact. But the demand for fuel ethers has continuously increased as shown by historical data from 2000-2010 for the Philippines. This demand is projected to continue to increase in the span of the plants useful life. Moreover, not only in the Philippines does the demand increase, but in other part of Asia as well such as Japan. Preliminary studies were conducted to evaluate the market feasibility of the plant. It was concluded that the market for DIPE has become more prominent throughout the years and continuous efforts in refining technology and local laws push the demand for the alternative oxygenates. Site selection was also done, considering factors such as climatic and site conditions,  ecological factors, and availability of energy. The plant will be located in Calaca, Batangas. A specific process flow diagram, piping and instrumentation and diagram, and plant layout was done, and design in the most economical and effective way possible. A total of 4.021 MT/hr of main raw materials go into the plant, and 4.021 MT/hr go out as well, composed of DIPE, isopropyl alcohol, water, and traces of propylene (C3). Detailed equipment design was done for the major equipment, which are the gradient reactor, vertical stripping column, distillation unit for the purification of DIPE, recovery unit for IPA, and reactor 2, which converts IPA further to DIPE.</subfield>
