<subfield code="a">The study was undertaken in Makati, an urban municipality in the National Capital Region in the Philippines. The objectives of the study were to determine the mothers' level of knowledge in relation to diarrhea, to describe the mothers' feeding and medical practices during diarrhea and to determine if maternal, socio-economic factors, knowledge and practice on diarrhea had any relationships. Other practices and information such as characteristic of the child with diarrhea were described in the study. A total of 171 mothers who were randomly selected from the preliminary survey list participated in the study. A structured and open-minded questionnaire was used to gather information on maternal and socio-economic factors and overall diarrhea practices while a validated 15-point multiple choice questionnaire was used to determine knowledge on diarrhea. The concepts included in the diarrhea knowledge tests were information regarding signs and symptoms, cause, effect and treatment. The response in the knowledge test were scored and classified into levels of low, fair, and high. The results showed that majority of the mothers had fair to high knowledge scores. However , among the concepts identified, treatment was the least known concept. There was no significant relationship found between maternal age, maternal employment and knowledge score while maternal education and health education attendance and knowledge were found to be significant. Similarly, no significant relationship was found on any of the household socio-economic and knowledge scores. In the area of practice, educational attainment was found to have significant relationship with diarrheal medicine but not feeding practice. On the other hand, household per capita income per month was not related to diarrheal medicine but not significantly related to feeding practice. Use of diarrheal medicine remains the more popular practice, although ORS awareness was very high. Herbal medications are still sued in the urban setting.</subfield>
