   <subfield code="a">One of the recent developments in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology is Intel Research Labs and University of Washington?s wireless identification and sensing platform (WISP). The device is powered wirelessly by off-the-shelf RFID readers. The project focuses on enhancements and limitations of the WISP. In this work, a new antenna design for WISP with an increased bandwidth was made. Four WISP units were produced with a cheaper electrolytic capacitor instead of a super capacitor for the energy storage device. The WISPs were tested for readability and sensing applications such as accelerometer and temperature data logging. The temperature data was comparable to the data of a common temperature sensor such as LM35. A fully functional WISP was then connected to a carbon dioxide sensor to log the sensor?s voltage readings. The data recorded by the WISP-CO2 sensor interface was consistent with the sensor performance. However, more sensor calibration needs to be done in order to precisely map the sensor voltage data with respect to the carbon dioxide gas concentration. Deploying WISP-CO2 sensor modules in energy-limited locations is not yet feasible because the WISP cannot provide sufficient energy to the sensor. Recommendations for future WISP-related projects include incorporating the modified antenna design into the WISP PCB layout, introducing other sensors with lower energy consumption and the use of portable RFID readers.</subfield>
