   <subfield code="a">Philippine Batteries Inc. (PBI), under RAMCAR Group of Companies, is a leading manufacturer of lead-acid batteries for cars, trucks, motorcycles and other industrial applications. The company?s aimed towards producing goods and providing services that will generate consumer satisfaction in terms of quality, costs and delivery. The study is concerned with the maintaining or improving process control as well as reducing variability. The proponents were assigned on three areas of production; namely, continuous properzi where lead strips are produced, the plates area where the plates are formed, and the assembly section where parts are put together to form a battery. In the continuous properzi section, the proponents were assigned to analyze tensile strength and percent elongation test results to determine the capability of the strip casting process to produce strips that meet specifications. The head of the quality assurance laboratory also wanted to determine existing relationships among different traits and properties of strips such as thickness, tensile strength and percent elongation prior to fracture.</subfield>

  <datafield tag="520" ind1="0" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The analysis of tensile strength and percent elongation data revealed irregularities such as varying tensile strength for strip types made of the same materials and produced under same operating conditions. Another striking observation was the varying process capability of the strip casting operation for different strip types. In this regard, the group recommended a more preventive maintenance policy for the continuous properzi to prevent interruptions that may cause alterations of desired strip properties. A tighter quality control for composition of lead alloys was also proposed since material composition might explain varying tensile strength of strips. Further analysis on the factors that affect the process such as temperature and pressure was also suggested to find explanations varying on process capability. In the plates area, the group was assigned to test whether four or twenty four hour curing period would be a better duration to minimize vibration loss. For positive plates, the group recommended the twenty four hour curing time since this leads to lower mean vibration loss, higher process capability and lower percentage of specification band used. For negative plates, the group observed that mean vibration loss for both curing times had no significant difference and both processes were out of control. Thus, the proponents recommended to change the formulation of Balox (paste)for negative plates such that vibration loss would be lessen. In the assembly section, the proponents examined six lines of AB Assembly using monthly percent defectives to determine which of the lines contributed more to the overall percent defective. The results showed that the order of lines in decreasing level of fraction defectives was as follows: Line 6, 2, 5, 4, 1 and 3. To decrease fraction defectives, the company would resolve bottleneck situations. Effective usage of control charts as an on-line monitoring tool would also aid in decreasing fraction defective since this would lead to immediate detection of problems in the line. To motivate workers towards quality improvement, performance evaluation measure should be based on their performance on improving the process instead of basing evaluation on performance of the process. The recommendations mentioned above were based on the limited information obtained during the duration of the study. Modifications made by more knowledgeable groups or as more information is gained regarding the processes.</subfield>
