Philippine Electric Corporation (PHILEC) is a Filipino owned company pioneering the manufacture of transformers in the Philippines. Among PHILEC's several product lines, the study was limited to the Distribution Transformers (DT) produced for Meralco. IT was further limited to cover only the period from June to September 1997. Core loss and winding loss determines the efficiency of the transformer. Excess of these losses from the guaranteed values results to penalty costs for the company. However, the study was concentrated on the occurrence of high core loss because it incurs a bigger penalty cost than excess winding loss. Based on the analysis, the occurrence of high core loss is largely attributed to the stress induced in the core as it goes through the different processes. The problem of excessive core losses may be addressed by: conducting a Process Capability Study, implementing tighter controls, applying Inspection Sampling, improving Materials Handling methods and equipments, and adopting an efficient Production Planing System.
