<subfield code="a">The research work is about an assessment tool, "the Person-in-Environment (PIE) Classification System adapted from the book of Karl, James M. & Wandrei, Karin E., (Editors), The PIE Classification System for Social Functioning Problems," The study aims to ascertain if a social worker can use the tool to describe problems that affect clients' social functioning at Jose Fabella Center (JFC)- a residential facility managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The target sample of the study are twenty clients, selected regardless of their status, gender, clientele category and eighteen (18) years and above from the wards of the JFC. The samples were grouped into two: the first group consisted of ten old JFC clients selected using the Simple Random Sampling, while the second group also composed of ten individuals were newly admitted JFC clients chosen through convenient sampling. The study is aimed at determining the difference between the assessment results of the General Intake Sheet (GIS) and PIE Classification System. All samples were assessed using the PIE Classification System while the GIS assessment results of the old subjects were reviewed. From the PIE and GIS assessment of the subjects, it shows that there is a difference in their assessment results, as follows: 1. The GIS assessment result was centered on describing the subjects' verbalized problems. The intervention plan of the worker focuses on the facilitation of assistance that will address the client's presented problems. For example, if the subject requested for transportation assistance, the action plan of the worker is to facilitate the provision of the fare of the client; 2. The PIE assessment, the PIE Classification System with it's four factors (role performance, mental health condition, physical health condition, and environmental system) and indexes (severity & duration of the problem and coping ability of the client) provided a description of not only the subjects' original problems but also other difficulties that affected their social functioning. It also allowed the social workers to have a holistic view of the client situation and the information has helped in choosing the appropriate approach to address their client's problems. Some advantage and disadvantage on the use the PIE Classification System from the comments and reactions of the JFC social workers were: 1. The PIE Classification System can provide a description of all relevant problems affecting the clients. This data allows the workers to have a holistic view of the client situation, which in turn help them to choose the most appropriate approach to address their client's problems. 2. On the other hand, the worker must be familiar with the PIE Classification System's concepts, usage guidelines, basic structure, indexes and forms so that he or she can use the tool effectively. With the GIS, the JFC social workers observed that: 1. It is an assessment tool that is easy and convenient to use. However, the primary concern of the profession, that is, to determine the all relevant problems that may affect the social functioning of a client seems not to be captured. 2. It describes the client's verbalized problem and the exerted efforts of the social worker is geared to the formulation of an intervention plan to address the problem presented by the client. 3. Apparently, with GIS assessment, the client's problems may not be very comprehensive. Thus, the total enhancement of the social functioning of the client may not be facilitated. In the general guidelines for administering the PIE Classification System, a worker's professional opinion can prevail in stating the client's problems. However, the JFC social workers have opted to discuss the identified problems with the clients, which in turn allow them to prioritize their subjects' problems and to determine the best approach in resolving their concerns. The three JFC social workers have commented positively on the use of the PIE Classification System as an assessment tool to describe problems of their client. On the other hand, they find it quite technical, because it is necessary for the user to know its concepts and guidelines beforehand to use effectively. Moreover, the collated data must be recorded and documented. Thus, it is a necessary that a workshop/training in administering the PIE Classification System should be conducted in ensuring its optimum utilization. The outcome of the study relates to the concept that the PIE Classification System is a means to make a thorough classification of the social functioning problems of a client that can help clarify the kind of human problem social work uniquely addresses. Likewise, on the basis of the results of the study, it can be confirmed that the PIE Classification System is an effective assessment tool. Therefore, the use of the PIE Classification System may be recommended in institutions of the Department of Social Welfare and Development or any residential center that cater to adult clients.</subfield>
