AB  - This study was conceptualized and formulated to identify the effects of air and noise pollution in selected public elementary schools in Marikina City and their implications on the design of the said schools. Employing a case study method, the study focused on three public elementary schools in Marikina City. A questionnaire-survey was filled out by 65 of 184 teachers chosen through simple random sampling in all three public elementary schools. The main sources of air pollution are vehicles such as jeepneys, trucks, buses, and motorcycles or tricycles. Meanwhile, the dominant sources of noise pollution are jeepneys and students' activities outside the classroom. Based on the teacher survey, the results show that students suffered respiratory related illnesses. Moreover, findings suggest that in the teacher-student interaction where parts of lectures are oftentimes repeated were caused by loud noise outside. Based on empirical observation, vehicular soot gathered on the physical environment of the school such as windows, walls, and ceilings. The findings confirm that the three selected public schools were affected by both air and noise pollution. Among the three public schools, the school's location that was farthest from the roadway suffered the least from the effects of pollution. The study further showed that the three schools did not meet both foreign and local codes and standards wherein a school site must be located 150 meters away from major roadway and free from any conditon that would endanger the health, safety, and cognitive growth of the students. The results of the study can be a basis for interior designers or city planners to come up with a better and effective design solution for schools in consideration for the safety and convenience of the students.
