Through the five (5) aspects of usability, enhancement and modifications were applied to creation of an OPAC prototype (Aklatan). The prototype was based from the current OPAC (iLib) and Information Retrieval (IR) systems available on the Internet. A usability study was conducted to students, librarians and educators of the University of the Philippines Diliman to determine the satisfaction ratings of the users on the current OPAC and the new OPAC prototype. Comparing the satisfaction ratings of the two systems, results show that there is an increase of 38.9%1 in satisfaction ratings among respondents in terms of ease of search, and a 24.09% increase in satisfaction in terms of the overall system. It was concluded that there is a direct correlation between the implementation of usability features and the increase of satisfaction ratings among respondents. Recommendations include the implementation of more complex methods to increase usability such as thesaural lookup for keyword terms used in searches. It was also determined more beneficial if the study was extended to study the impact the system on a longer term. This would determine the effect on the system in terms of ROI for the institution and the greater impact on the retrieval of materials of the patrons of the library. Online library catalogs.
