Sumario:A school is the most evident institution where children learn skills, such as reading, writing and other literacy skills, that would be useful to him in the future. The school library, being an integral part of the school, supports the school in achieving its main objective. A teacher is seen as the leader of the classroom and considered to be the most influential factor affecting a student's educational career. It is also the teacher's responsibility to provide his students with the necessary information resources that may supplement classroom instruction. The school library, containing various information resources, is a useful learning laboratory that supplements classroom instruction. The study's general objective is to know the perceptions of teachers regarding their influence on their student's school library use.
This study made use of the qualitative research method because it appropriately describes the perceptions of the school teachers. A questionnaire was designed to survey the perceptions of the teachers in the selected schools. The population of the research includes the elementary teachers of the selected private elementary school in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija. The selected private schools are the School of the Sacred Heart of San Jose City, Bettbien Montessori Center, Mount Carmel Montessori Center, Saint Joseph School, Gracious Shepherd Christian Academy and Elim Science Academy. The researcher chose to make use of survey questionnaires to gather data in the research. The questionnaire comprised thirty-three items which reflected the perceptions of elementary teachers regarding how they can influence their students to use the school library.
The researcher organized the survey questionnaire statements into categories. These are the following: a) the perceived relationship of teachers with their students and their interest; b) their perceived promotion of the school library to the students; c) presentation and use of the school library and its materials; d) the library activities that they give to their students; e) and, lastly, the teachers view and their relationships with the school library and the librarian. The researcher tabulated the overall responses of the teachers and arranged it to come up with a quantitative measure of the perception of the teachers in each school and the relationship of the subject/s that they teach and the grade level/s that they handle.
This study shows that the teachers in private elementary school libraries in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, perceive that they have great influence over their students and they have a close relationship with their students and they present discussions that stimulate the interests of their students. Hence, they become more influential and the more they can affect change to the students. The teachers promote school library use to their students by directly motivating their students to use the school library. The teachers use the library materials in their teaching by giving activities to the students that make use of the library materials. Most of the teachers encourage their students to go and use the school library. Lastly, the teachers believe that the school library is an integral part of the school that assists in student learning and achievement.
