   <subfield code="a">The field of medicine encompasses a very broad array of subject matter. Because this involves a great deal of information, there is a need for a certain tool that will enhance access to such enormity of information. There are also problems that crop up such as the issue of language barriers and vagueness and ambiguity regarding semantics. In answer to this concerns, the field of medical informatics has materialized.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">This study is a part of the Multilingual Philippine Medical Thesaurus Project, one of the initiatives emanating from the collaborative efforts of the Institute of Library and Information Science-University of the Philippines Diliman, and the College of Medicine-University of the Philippines Manila. The partnership started last December 2002 with the signing of the memorandum of agreement covering collaborative efforts in medical informatics research (Sirios 2003). The project involves translation of medical terms from the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) online, to the various languages in the country. The medical terms were downloaded from the MeSH website. These medical terms were listed in a worksheet, where qualified respondents were asked to write down the translation in Iluko. The respondents, who were chosen according to purposive sampling, including two medical professionals and non-medical professionals as well, all of whom speak Iluko as their first language. A list of previously ranked dictionary references was adopted from the past study (Simbulan 2003) for standardization.</subfield>

  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">After data gathering, the terms were analyzed according to the policies and guidelines used in thesaurus construction by ISO 5964. Moreover, the researcher also adopted policies and guidelines from previous studies in the same language (Simbulan, Sirios 2003) for conformity.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The researcher was able to produce a total of 78 thesaurus entries in Iluko and is composed of both preferred and non-preferred terms for fluids and secretions. However, only 35 of these are the entry or preferred terms out of the 60 terms downloaded from the MeSH website, and there are nine terms with definitions only.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">On the other hand, there are a total of 71 thesaurus entries in Iluko including both preferred and non-preferred terms for stomatognathic system. 47 of these are the entry or preferred terms out of the 81 terms downloaded from the MeSH website. There are four terms that were provided with definitions only.</subfield>
