   <subfield code="a">This study determined the reading interests and habits of freshmen students in Diliman. The respondents of the survey were freshmen students taking up English 1, every Mondays and Thursdays. A total of 119 respondents participated in the survey. The study utilized survey questionnaires and used frequency distribution in analyzing and interpreting the data gathered. The questionnaire was about the library usage and the reading preference of the respondents.</subfield>

  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Findings show that majority of the respondents were not aware of the library's orientation program. Most of the respondents visit the library once a month and their main purpose for visiting the library is to do research work and homework, making pleasure reading the last reason for their library visit. The library materials that they usually borrow are textbooks and reference books and they seldom borrow novels. Majority of the respondents said that the library's collections meet the requirements of their English 1 class and the library usually has the materials that they need, so therefor they are satisfied with the library's services. They also said that it fosters an atmosphere that is conducive for studying and reading.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Findings also show that fiction is highly preferred over non-fiction by most of the respondents. Those respondents who prefer fiction mostly favored the sub genres bestsellers and romance novels. They read fiction once a month, and they borrow from a friend/relative or the school library. At times, they buy fiction materials from the bookstore and rarely get these materials from public libraries. As for the case of those respondents who favored non-fiction, they prefer to read materials belonging to the sub-genre Science and Technology. They read non-fiction once a month and their main source for these materials is the college library.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The respondents' reading interests vary but they do not have a regular reading habit. They seldom do pleasure reading, but majority of them ensure that the materials they read for their pleasure reading help them in their English classes. The researcher, therefore, suggests that a study on how these preferences affect their performances in their classes can be made. However, a comparison between the performances in classes of frequent readers and occasional readers can also be done.</subfield>
