   <subfield code="a">Active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems are being assimilated into business processes. The use of active RFID, with onboard power sources in the transponders, provides a more robust system in terms of reading range and directivity compared to passive RFID because of higher transmitting power and higher receiving sensitivity. The primary drawback is the need for a power source due to the use of active circuits. For this project, we developed an active RFID systems using Eazix EZZBM01 modules for the reader an the tags. We also built a portable reader, which can be attached to a GSM module and a serial LCD module. In addition, we developed a graphical user interface (GUI) for the host computer using Python. The objective of the project was to achieve long tag battery life and high tag identification rate by employing the proper wakeup and sleep mechanisms for an IEEE 802.15.4 based architecture. We developed four different modes of operation for our system. We then evaluated the performance of the system for each of these modes through experiments in an open and unobstructed environment. Among the four, we were able to achieve the best performance with the fourth mode, where the microcontroller's power down mode was employed and a counter stored in the tag's EEPROM was used.</subfield>
