<subfield code="a">This is a study of the salary conditions of 107 librarians employed in commercial establishments, business schools, banks and agencies concerned with trade policies, from both the government and private sectors in the Metro-Manila Area. Its objectives are to find out the prevailing salary of this group of special librarians and the factors that affect their salaries. These factors, the survey shows are manifold. On the other hand, they include the paying capacity of the establishments and the attitudes of the management toward the library. On the other hand, they include the circumstances of the librarian's educational qualifications, professional library experience and, to some extent, her major responsibilities and age.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. Salaries were evaluated in terms of mean scores and percentages corresponding to the variables believed to affect the salary conditions - factors such as the librarian's qualifications and library features. In one instance the chi-square test of significance was used.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The annual mean and median salaries of the librarians included in the survey are P9,756.51 and P9,361.57, while the yearly mean and median gross incomes which include bonuses, living allowances and other fringe benefits, are P12,910.71 and P11, 937.00, respectively.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Respondents receiving the highest salary come from the establishments in the private sector which are listed among the Top 1000 Philippine Corporations from 1975 and 1976. They have library science degrees, either in the undergraduate or graduate level. The respondents with master's degrees are more highly paid than those with bachelor's degrees only. Respondents whose major subject field are English/Journalism are more highly paid than those whose major fields are Business/Economics, Education, and Social Science. Four respondents with the designation "Chief Information/Documentation Officer" have a higher mean salary than the 77 respondents designated as "Chief Librarians". The highest paid librarians are those with many years of professional library experience, in the age group 41-50, and are married males. They perform administrative and supervisory functions and have permanent appointments. Although their libraries in Manila are not equipped with the most modern equipment, they have small but highly specialized collections to answer the research needs of their clientele. These librarians enjoy numerous fringe benefits and are member of professional library associations but seem not to be interested in union membership.</subfield>

<subfield code="a">This study, the first of its kind in the country, could serve as a basis for the upgrading of the salaries of librarians whose low pay has made the profession unattractive for recruitment.</subfield>
