Description
Summary:This research focused on the perceptions of 60 UP-BLIS students on the Master of Library and Information Science Program, with the purpose of improving the student's view of the MLIS program, as well as advancing the program itself. The study sought to: 1) find out how UP-BLIS perceive the MLIS program and if they think it is worth pursuing after graduation; 2) determine the level of familiarity of BLIS students regarding the MLIS program; 3) find out if they would pursue the program after graduation; 4) determine the reasons for pursuing the program; 5) determine the reasons for not pursuing the program; 6) determine the factors that affect the perceptions of UP-BLIS students to pursue or not to pursue the MLIS program; and 7) indicate the expectations of BLIS students if they would pursue it.
The findings revealed that: 1) a strong majority of UP-BLIS students are not aware of the Plan A/Plan B Scheme of the MLIS program; 2) Fifty-two percent of the students would not pursue the MLIS program; 3) the top reasons why UP-BLIS students would not pursue the program are because they want to work after graduation and that they prefer pursuing a Master's degree in another discipline; 4) the main factors affecting the reasons in number 3 are that a Master's degree in another discipline is more academically challenging and complements better their BLIS degree, and that they feel secure about their BLIS knowledge; 5) the overall expectations of non-pursuing UP-BLIS students regarding the MLIS program is that the latter provides more in-depth knowledge better career opportunities and compensation, offers specialization in the LIS field; 6) the top reasons why other UP-BLIS students would pursue the MLIS program are that it offers more advanced knowledge about LIS, their BLIS degree is not enough to land a good job, and they are interested in the LIS field; 7) the main factors affecting the reasons in number (6) are that the MLIS degree is a good investment, their BLIS knowledge is not sufficient, their young minds can absorb and assimilate ideas faster, and they want to excel in the LIS field.
This study recommends the following; 1) the MLIS program should be promoted and explained concisely and thoroughly during orientations, seminars, conferences, workshops, career talks, brochures, flyers, through the internet, and on E-mail; 2) aspects to be elaborated about the MLIS program include the Plan A/Plan B Scheme, the MLIS program description which includes its history, goals and objectives; 3) the MLIS program should be evaluated periodically to make sure that it is in step with the current information and teaching trends; 4) the equipment and facilities are updated and improved to meet the current needs of information technology; 5) the MLIS program should offer specialization in librarianship in fields like Engineering, Business, Economics, etc. in order to diversify the program and the LIS field; and to allow students to focus in their specific field of interest and enhance their skill; 6) the stereotype of the librarian profession should be discussed in order to clear out any false notions about the profession thus changing this stereotype image and attracting more students to the LIS field.
