   <subfield code="a">This study aims to assess the computer literacy of the UP Institute of Library Science (ILS) students and their utilization of on-line library database. It also seeks to determine if there is a relationship between computer literacy and use of online databases. Furthermore, the study probes to come up with recommendations to promote and enhance computer awareness among the students and to optimize their use of databases.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">A survey using a 14 item questionnaire is conducted to gather data from 124 graduate and undergraduate students. The study focuses on three libraries that provide computerized bibliographic services to the students and are nearest to the ILS.</subfield>

  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The study reveals that 9 percent of the population are computer illiterate, 39 percent have low computer literacy, 37 percent have moderate computer literacy and 15 percent are proficient in several softwares. When it comes to the use of databases, the average ILS student seldom uses them. Most of the respondents (59 percent) acquire computer knowledge from watching someone at work and 56 percent refer to reading materials. Thirty-six percent learn from curriculum courses and lectures. For first hands-on experience, 44(36 percent) had it in a computer class, 40 (32 percent) in the office and 16 (13 percent) at a friend's house. There are at home (8 percent), and in computer rental shops (11 percent).Among non-computer owners, 11 are not familiar with any computer software. All 36 computer owners are familiar with computer software in varying degrees.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Fifty-two percent of the respondents go to the card catalog first when conducting bibliographic searching, 39 percent prefer the databases and 9 percent have no response. Among the factors that affect database use, three are most eminent: 1. lack of computer knowledge, 2. lack of familiarity with databases, the following suggestions are given: 1. a computer course be integrated into the curriculum, 2. more computer units to be made available to the students through library services computer classes 3. user orientation on database use 4. strategic location of the system.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">Direct relationship is found among variables such as educational level and computer literacy; database use and computer literacy. At the .05 level, the difference in computer literacy levels between owners and non-owners of computers at home is found to be significant. In all variables, chi-square test is used.</subfield>
