Authorship structure of scholarly disciplines an empiirical study of Philippine research journals

This study was conducted to find out whether Lotka's law of scientific productivity applies to selected Filipiniana research journals. The theory of absolute and relative concentration was also tested to prove that as the sample size increases, relative concentration also increases. Authorshi...

520 3 |a This study was conducted to find out whether Lotka's law of scientific productivity applies to selected Filipiniana research journals. The theory of absolute and relative concentration was also tested to prove that as the sample size increases, relative concentration also increases. Authorship in the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities disciplines were also delved into, as well as comparison of authorship in the hard and soft sciences. A comparison between pure and applied science was also done by comparing a journal title in mathematics with selected journals in science, medicine, biotechnology, engineering, and economics.
520 3 |a The study was done on 16 journal titles: Asian Studies, Bulletin of the American Historical Collection, Education Quarterly, Phillippine Journal of Psychology, Philippine Journal of Public Administration, Philippine Law Journal, Philippine Political Science Journal, Philippine Review of Economics, Philippine Sociological Review, Journal of the Philippine Medical Association, Matimyas Matematika, Phillippine Journal of Biotechnology, Philippine Journal of Science, Philippine Engineering Journal, Philippine Humanities Review, Philippine Numismatic Monographs.
520 3 |a The journals were analyzed into two time-frames: whole series, and 1990-1998. Author-based and article-based analyses were done to obtain data for which the statistical methods were conducted. Generally, more males contribute to all the journals. For article-based analysis, majority of the articles were of single authorship.
520 3 |a Collaboration is more prevalent in science subjects as revealed by the large number of multiple authorship in both time frames. This may be due to the nature of research in sciences where major projects or research requires combined efforts of several researchers or scientists. Not all the journals conformed to Lotka's law of scientific productivity. For the whole series, Journal of Philippine Medical Association, Philippine Law Journal, Philippine Review of Economics, Philippine Journal of Public Administration, Philippine Engineering Journal, Education Quarterly, Philippine Sociological Review, and Asian Studies, the theory 1/n2 did not apply since these journal titles obtained largest differences in actual observed authors and Lotka's predicted authors which are greater than the p values ser at a.01 for each journal. For the 1990-1998 series, Philippine Journal of Science, Journal of Philippine Medical Association, Philippine Journal of Public Administration, Philippine Law Journal, Education Quarterly, and Philippine Sociological Review have differences which are greater than the p values set at a .01 in the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test. Gini's index applies to all the journals except in Philippine Humanities Review. This means that for all the journals, as the sample size increases, the inequality between the number of authors who contribute only one article and the number of productive authors (i.e., authors, producing more than one article) also increases.
520 3 |a Applying Kendall Tau test on whether the ranking generated by arranging the values of male percentages and the values of the Gini indices in descending order is similar to the ranking done by Biglan and McGrath reveal that the generated rankings are not similar to the rankings by Biglan and McGrath.T-test to compare authorship in Science, Social Science, and Humanities reveal that equal number of males contributes in the Humanities and in Social Science, more males contribute in Humanities than in Science and in there is an equal number of males who contribute in Science and in Social Science. For the entire test, the null hypotheses were accepted, meaning, gender does not affect contribution whether the subject is science, social science, or humanities. Chi-square was done to test relationship between solitariness and empirical content of journals. Results reveal that with Philippine Engineering Journal, solitariness and empirical content are independent, because engineering is more mathematics-based than the other subjects.
