520 3 |a The main objective of the study was to determine the information needs and use patterns of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) employees who use the MERALCO Central Library. In particular, it sought to find out their corporate department affiliation, their job level position, as well as their age and sex, and the relationship of these two areas of knowledge, sources, types and forms of their needed information, and to the dependent variables of frequency of use, success in information searching and level of satisfaction with library services. Determining their motives and purposes in using the Central Library, their techniques and methods for searching information and their suggestions for library improvements were also considered.
520 3 |a The study employed the descriptive survey method utilizing a structured questionnaire. The survey was conducted from January 28-February 2, 2002. Fifty-six MERALCO employees were the respondents. They were the active users who personally visited and used the Central Library during the data gathering period. Frequency and percentage distribution and computed mean were employed to analyze the data.
520 3 |a The MERALCO employees who use the Central Library come from different corporate department but majority comes from the Engineering Department Supervisory level employees are the frequent users in terms of number. In general, information on Engineering is needed by many, but by corporate department, employees have their preferred areas of knowledge mainly determined by their specialization. The most preferred information sources are technical journals, the most preferred forms are articles and the most preferred type is general background information. The choice of these materials has something to do with how technical or not their work is. In searching for these materials, consulting the librarian is commonly employed.
520 3 |a The use of the library has always something to do with work related reasons. This was proved by the employees stating that they use the Central Library to keep up-to-date with progress in their fields of specialization. In terms of frequency of use, they are said to be frequent users who tend to visit library "daily to once a month" on average. When related to age, sex, corporate department-affiliation and job level position, those employees belonging to age bracket 51-60, male category, Administration Department and supervisory level position are the most frequent library users
520 3 |a Respectively. MERALCO employees are generally successful when searching for information that they need. When related to age, sex, corporate department affiliation and job level position, employees belonging to age bracket 51-60, male category, Logistics Department and entry level position are the most successful users, respectively. Generally, they are also satisfied with the services provided by the Central Library. As related to independent variables, whose who belong to age bracket 41-50, female category, Logistics Department and entry level position are the most satisfied. The main reasons for dissatisfaction of the few include weaknesses of the collection in their fields of specialization and inadequacy of computer terminals for Internet browsing.
520 3 |a It may be concluded that MERALCO employees have varying information needs and patterns of use. Independent variables such as age, sex, corporate department affiliation and job level position affect how they prefer their needed information, how satisfied they are with library services and how successful they are in information searching. The MERALCO Central Library is performing a vital service in providing the information needs of these employees. However, there is a need for the library to further improve its services by making the following available: an Internet browsing service, reproduction facilities, CD-ROM section, a library committee for policy-making, updating of the collection, and strengthening the current awareness program.
