520 3 |a With a contemporary environment of rapid technological change proliferating information resources and a fast-changing era of information age, the need for an information literate society has been realized. In recognizing this, academic institutions have extensively responded to educational reforms and development programs. Part of this transformation, particularly in advancing information literacy, is greatly contributed by librarians or information specialists in collaboration with the faculty.
520 3 |a The study aimed to determine the current level of information literacy among freshmen students in UP Diliman. It examined the possible effects of the independent variables, age, gender, college and type of high school on the dependent variables (scores gained in questions pertaining to library skills, subject analysis, usage and accessibility of information resources, problems in using information resources, library instruction and training received, experience and attitude towards school-related writing assignments, and overall self-rated skills).
520 3 |a The study made used of a survey questionnaire, which was subdivided into three parts; first part is on library skills, second part is on subject analysis, and the third part is on self-assessment. Groupings of questions within these parts served as the dependent variables. In selecting the sample population, systematic random sampling was used. While three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression were used to analyze the data.
520 3 |a The results show that there is no significant difference between public and private high school graduates in terms of average scores gained from questions pertaining to library skills and subject analysis. It also shows that private high school graduates have more difficulty in dealing with problems encountered when using library and information resources compared to public high school graduates, even though private high school graduates have more advance library instruction and training than public high school graduates. The college of the respondents is predominantly the significant factor affecting the given dependent variables. Results show that students from the College of Social Science and Philosophy (CSSP) have better background in terms of library instruction and training that students from College of Arts and Letters (CAL). CSSP majors also gained a higher score in questions pertaining to library skills and subject analysis as compared to CAL majors. Gender of respondent was found to have a positive correlation with the third dependent variable, or score gained from questions pertaining to subject analysis. Results show that male respondents gained a higher score in this section as compared to female respondents. The independent variable, age of respondent, was excluded in the analysis using three-way ANOVA, since the respondents are generally within the same range of age. Nevertheless, regression results show that younger respondents have a higher mean score in the objective questions pertaining to library skills and subject analysis than the older respondents.
