520 3 |a A descriptive survey was used to investigate the utilization of instructional media materials (IMM) in selected library schools in Metro Manila. The objectives of this study were: 1) to find out the status of instructional media materials in selected library schools in Metro Manila; 2) to determine the extent of utilization of instructional media materials by the faculty of the selected library schools; and 3) to determine the effects of the use of instructional media materials on the teaching and learning process.
520 3 |a Out of the six (6) library schools that were originally included in the survey, only three (3) schools responded. The results of the survey showed that the most known IMM are CD-ROMs (100 percent) and the least known are the direct/opaque projector and kits (5 percent), while the most used IMM for lectures, reports, etc., are the transparencies (95 percent), the least used are the kits (5 percent). Fifty-eight percent of the faculty have encountered problems in the use of IMMs and the most common problem is the breakdown of equipment (55 percent). The most common practice that they use is self-instruction (53 percent) on how to handle and operate IMM.
520 3 |a The faculty's perceptions of the effects of the teaching and learning process is that eighty-four percent are sure that students tend to participate more in the lessons when IMM are used. Eighty-four percent are also sure that students learn faster when varied materials are used, but only seventy-four percent are sure that using IMM can be an effective alternative from the traditional classroom learning process for the students to gain knowledge.
520 3 |a It is recommended that the library/institution should provide adequate equipment so that the faculty can use IMM in the classroom, they should also provide the faculty a list of the available materials. The collection should be updated to keep up with the current technologies and trends. The faculty should be encouraged to participate in training, etc. that is conducted for the operation of IMM so that they can use them effectively and a balance between media and traditional methods should be adopted.
