Riassunto:Literature is an important aid in helping children in their development. It can satisfy not only every child's informational needs, but his recreational and personal needs as well. Yet not every child has an equal opportunity to have access and enjoy their kind literature. Here the library, particularly the public library, has the role of providing a venue for children to enjoy the kind of literature suited to them.
This study attempts to give an overall picture of the characteristics of the children's literature collection of selected public libraries in Metro Manila. Five libraries were the subject of this study: The Children's Library (Robinson's Galleria), Museo Pambata (MP) Resource Center (Manila), Makati City Library (Makati), Pasig City Library (Pasig) and Marikina Municipal Library (Marikina). Interviews and document analysis were conducted to gather data on the collection's actual size, its growth rate, subject and coverage, methods of acquisition and arrangement.
Of the five libraries studied, The Children's Library and MP Resource Center have the biggest, more organized and balanced collection for children while Marikina Municipal Library has the least on its collection. Being run by private institutions, the two former libraries were able to provide more of its collection than that of Makati City Library and Marikina Municipal Library.
Due to the low budgetary allocations from the local government units, these libraries have mostly donated books either from the National Library or from other private and government institutions for their collections. Textbooks in particular takes a big percentage of it. Another problem is the organization. The Pasig City Library and Marikina Municipal Library's collection were still unorganized. They both lack catalogs and organized shelflist or unionlist for the checking of their collection.
