520 3 |a The purpose of this study was to determine the distinct qualities of books that bring on a higher probability of being lost. It also aimed to identify the possible preventive measures in minimizing if not eliminating the probability of books getting lost. Specifically, this study tried to answer the questions ""What are the characteristic of books that bring on a higher probability of being lost?"", ""In what subject area/-s does the book belong?"", ""When was it published?"", ""What is the size of the book?"". ""Is it thick or thin?"", ""Is it illustrated or not?"", ""Is it rare?"", ""Where was the book published?""
520 3 |a This study utilized the frequency description table in analyzing the data. The subjects of the study were the three sections of UP Main Library : the Arts and Letters, Social Sciences, and the General Reference. The researcher gathered the 1998-2000 list of lost books in the three sections. The total number of lost books in the three sections were: one thousand one hundred ten (1110). Four hundred twelve (412) in the Arts and Letters, four hundred eighty nine (489) in Social Sciences, and two hundred nine (209) in General Reference.
520 3 |a Results of the study showed that factors such as year and place of publication, size, thickness, rarity, and presence/absence of illustrations did not matter in the probability of a book being lost. Instead, only the subject of the book affected the probability. Notwithstanding the size, year and place of publication, thickness, rarity, with or without illustrations of the book, the possible thief would do anything to steal it if the subject really appeals to him or her.
520 3 |a The top 5 subjects in the Arts and letters were: (1) English literature; (2) Romance literature; (3) American literature; (4) Literature; and (5) Germanic literature. In the Social Sciences the top 5 subjects were: (1) Psychology; (2) Philosophy; (3) Internal medicine; (4) Economics; and (5) Economic history and conditions. In the General Reference the top 5 subjects were: (1) Bibliography, dictionaries, etc.; (2) Transportation; (3) Asia; (4) English language; and (5) Geography. There were more losses of books that were published in 1990 and below. In terms of size more medium-sized books were lost. Likewise, medium thick books showed the higher number of lost books. In terms of place of publication, more foreign books were lost compared to local books. However, most books that were lost did not have illustrations.
520 3 |a The following recommendations were put in minimizing theft in the libraries : (1) buy or have more additional copies of books especially in the top 5 subjects in each section; (2) put grills on windows; (3) install more photocopying machines; (4) lower the price of photocopying; (5) meticulous search of students' bags and folders when leaving the libraries; (6) hiring more efficient and friendly library staff; (7) install a depository counter for students' and other users' bags; (8) libraries should conduct yearly or periodic inventories; (9) the library should put up signs which state that theft in the library is strictly prohibited and the punishment that will be meted; (10) librarians should increase accessibility to books, like lengthening the borrowing period, increasing the number of books that a user could borrow, etc. (11) simplify the process in borrowing should be simple.
