Description
Summary:The study was conducted in order to analyze the factors which affect faculty-librarian relationship in book selection at the De La Salle University Library. It was hypothesized that: (1) there is no significant difference in the faculty and librarian relationship in book selection with reference to the following factors: years of recommending books; average number of books ordered yearly; audience of book selection; purpose of book selection; criteria of book selection; sources utilized in book selection; ways of participation in book selection; allocation of book budget per department.
The data were gathered with the use of two similar research questionnaires distributed to the faculty and librarians. A total of 83 faculty members and 8 librarians who submitted book orders during the recent academic year 1999-2000 to 2001-2002 at the De La Salle University Library were the respondents. The responses were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS version ii. The hypotheses were tested using the Wilcoxson Matched Pair signed Rank Test.
The results showed that there is no significant difference in the faculty and librarian relationship with reference to years of recommending books, average number of books ordered yearly, audience of book selection, purpose of book selection, criteria of book selection, sources utilized in book selection, ways of participation in book selection and allocation o9f book budget per department since when statistically correlated, the hypothesis cannot be rejected. The hypothesis which states that there are no existing problems which affect faculty librarian relationship in books election cannot be accepted since minimal problems exist. The attitude of a faculty and librarian selectors share a common view with respect to the responsibility for book selection.
On the basis of the findings, it is recommended that the library should improve communication between librarians and faculty by initiating visits to their departmental meetings, customizing service to meet departmental needs, issuing memorandum about new materials and holding focus meetings to discuss book selection. The library should also strengthen its proactive role in the collection development by distributing surveys, collecting feedback, providing means for faculty to fulfill their selection responsibilities and planning collection enhancement activities.
