   <subfield code="a">Seminars and conferences are conducted by library associations every now and then. This study was done to find out what training programs were conducted by the nine library associations in the Philippines, namely: ALAP; ASLP; MAHLAP; PAARL; PASL; PATLS; PGLL; PLAI; and PLAP. It aimed to determine what topics were covered in the different seminars and conferences by what associations, which of the topics had the most/least number of training programs, and what factors the associations considered in preparing for seminars and conferences. This covered the years from 1993 to 1998, a six year period.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Data were gathered using historical methods of research. Annual reports, newsletters, seminar/conference programs, and other pertinent documents were used to gather needed information. They were supplemented by interviews with past and present officers of different associations. These were analyzed by comparing the information between and among the associations to see the similarities or differences in the training programs they conducted from 1993-1998. Statistical data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, and mean.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">There were sixty-eight (68) training programs conducted during the period under review. Based on the data gathered, it appeared that information technology (IT) was the topic that had the most number of seminars/conferences, followed by librarianship, management, library or reader services, and lastly by technical services and communication which had four (4) training programs in six years. Associations should be more aware of what topics were given more emphasis so that other areas could also be considered.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Of the nine associations, PAARL gave the most number of seminars/conferences with eighteen (18) while PATLS and PLAP had the least with (4) each. Although conducting seminars/conferences depended on the associations' objectives, regular but well-spaced training programs would allow more members to participate in them. It was also noted that most resource persons in these training programs were from the academe and majority were seasoned librarians.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">One could not argue why associations selected these expert people. But other capable library professionals should also be tapped, particularly those who are not yet considered experts and belonging to the younger breed with fresh and vibrant ideas and other potentials so that future generations are ensured of highly qualified trainers/lecturers.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Factors considered in selecting topics, speakers, venues, dates, and other conference details were similar across associations, though no formal policies and guidelines had been established. Close similarities in topics showed poor coordination between and among associations that may lead to duplication of efforts.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Most associations did not have complete files of teh seminars/conferences they conducted. One had to rely on the generosity of officers who maintain their own copies, particularly those who had been conference persons. A good records keeping practice and consistent formal turnover of these records should be done by the different associations and that these should be made available to anybody who need/request these. Hence, these treasured records would be the associations' lasting legacy to not only to their respective future members but to Philippine librarianship in general.</subfield>
