   <subfield code="a">This study looked into the strengths and weaknesses of the library resources in relation to the success of Japanese studies programs of the seven selected academic institutions in Metro Manila. The following were the specific problems of the study: 1) what are the perceptions of the faculty, students and librarians in the seven schools covered in this study regarding the Japanese studies collection in their own libraries; 2) do they share or differ in their perceptions; 3) are the Japanese studies collection in these seven schools strong or do they need improvement; and 4) what is the status of the Japanese studies collection of these seven schools?</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The basic assumption of the study is that the seven academic institutions differ in their library resources and their Japanese studies programs. The sub-assumption was that some institutions have stronger library resources, hence, these have stronger Japanese studies programs; other institutions with weaker library resources have weaker Japanese studies programs. The study used a descriptive survey method, adapting the simplest research design of the one-shot, one-group type. The data gathering instrument was a two-part questionnaire checklist; the library resources checklist and the course offering checklist. The respondents totaling 99, were all faculty members (30) with a teaching load in the Japanese studies programs of the schools concerned; the head librarians (7) of the same schools; the students (62) enrolled in any course in the Japanese studies program. The sampling for the students were based on convenience, i.e., anyone whom the researcher considered as a willing respondent was approached. The result showed that improvement is much needed in almost all aspects of the Japanese studies collection in the seven institutions; there is no difference in the perceptions between faculty and student respondents; the Japanese studies collection were unsatisfactory, inappropriate and inadequate in size; the Japanese studies collection were outdated and not very well developed; there is an inadequate fit between the Japanese studies course offerings and adequate provisions of library resources; the Japanese studies collection were strong in history, moderately strong in economics/business and philology/literature and the rest of the subject fields were considered weak which revealed that there has been an imbalance acquisition of materials in the subject fields/disciplines.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The conclusions are: 1) the present state of affairs of the Japanese studies collection provide a clear indication of how this has affected and set out a trend in relation to the Japanese studies programs of the seven schools; although there are dissimilarities in the programs, the Japanese studies collection have a lot of things to do to make them appropriate, adequate, relevant, and updated; largeness of the collection does not necessarily correspond also to provision of appropriate, adequate, relevant, accurate, developed and updated materials but may also involve quality of the collection; 2) because of traditional liberal arts and humanities traditions, the schools have large enrolments in these areas resulting in a lopsided picture of the collection where culture, the arts and the social sciences were given much attention; 3) the inadequate fit between library resources and course offerings has affected instruction in the sense that the teachers can only teach so much or to such an extent depending upon the resources in their library; and 4) based on the assumption of the study; the strength of the collection is indicative of the strength of the Japanese studies programs; the perceptions of the respondents manifest that the need to improve and develop further their programs are directly related to the strength and weaknesses of their Japanese studies collection; and that strength and weaknesses of the Japanese studies programs may be measured by other dimensions and therefore, the over-all strength cannot be measured by the library collection alone.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The recommendations include the following : 1) intensify acquisition of library materials both print and non-print; 2) revision of the curriculum to include natural/physical sciences subjects; 3) modernize and update materials and separate collection from the main library's general collection; 4) conduct a similar study in all other schools, including those in other parts of the Philippines; 5) promote an area of specialization among libraries; 6) computerization of Japanese studies collection; 7) establishment of inter-institutional internet network within the Philippines and later with Japan and foreign countries.</subfield>
