520 3 |a This is a descriptive study of children's service in Philippine public libraries. The 1993 Directory of Public Libraries put out by the Public Libraries Division of the National Library has a total of 523 public libraries broken down as follows: 1 regional, 41 provincial, 32 city, 389 municipal libraries, and 60 barangay, district, or deposit station libraries. Of this number, 34 provincial, 29 city and 91 municipal libraries or a total of 154 public libraries were surveyed. One hundred one questionnaires were returned.
520 3 |a The research findings show that public libraries are staffed with professionally trained librarians. The children's services section is in a separate room and is handled by staff designated by the head librarian. Children's books are available but not extensively. These consist of picture books, fiction, non-fiction, and "easy to read" books. There are periodicals and magazines for children as well as non-book materials but these are also limited in number. Majority of the respondents have A-V materials with the appropriate equipment but limited, likewise.
520 3 |a The study reveals further that programs and activities for children undertaken by the libraries surveyed are the traditional ones. Thes include storytelling, book talks, reference, and circulation services. Library clubs for children do not exist. Services for exceptional children are not provided. There is much to be desired in the children's services section in the country's public libraries. To effectively produce a nation of readers, children and their early age must b e taught the love for books and reading. Library usage has to be encouraged by parents, teachers, and librarians. to achieve this aim, public libraries must harness strong support from both public and private agencies, including the communities they serve.
