Description
Summary:Though libraries have existed for centuries, library science is still a young profession developing its body of knowledge. In the present research, 217 sources and facts on Philippine library history from the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth have been compiled and abstracted. The search for source materials in the libraries, museums, and archives of Metro Manila have been limited to this historical period. The historical narrative that follows is divided chronologically into centuries.
Medieval library concept still dominated the sixteenth and the seventeenth century in the Philippines. There was a constant flow of books from Europe, mostly religious books. Fiction and secular writing did not reach the Philippines until much later. The new library approach brought about by the Age of Enlightenment did not reach the Philippnes until the end of the eighteenth century. During the nineteenth century many new libraries were set up. There was a concern to establish libraries and to popularize readings, but this concern and awareness did not materialize in the solid library institutions that could be seen in the Europe of the time. Development could only come about after some form of independence from the distant central government which was too busy with its own problems. This was to come with the Philippine Revolution.
Research should continue in this field. It is recommended for librarians to start writing about the history of their own libraries. This will only happen if a well-established library institution promotes it.
