   <subfield code="a">This study was conducted to draw a profile of theological librarians in the Philippines in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, professional profile and experience, technical knowledge, and training needs. Management practices or managerial preferences and management styles of the respondents were also determined. Correlations among the sociodemographic characteristics and management practices were computed. The chi-square and contingency of coefficient tests were used to analyze and interpret the data.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Findings revealed that over half of 81 respondents in the sample did not have any formal education or training in library science. Three-fourths of the respondents felt they were most competent in cataloging and classifying books, but the same proportion of respondents felt less competent in cataloging and classifying non-book materials. The latter was the most frequently mentioned library skill in which training was deemed most needed.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Majority of the respondents perceived their role as a team leader rather than as an agent of change. They said that they planned for times to involve subordinates in decision making. Many respondents allowed their staff to take advantage of training. Majority of the respondents asserted that they maintained open, candid communication with subordinates and that they encouraged feedback from subordinates during meetings. Majority of the respondents indicated a demographic style of management.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Younger respondents had shorter length of service. Those with longer length of professional experience were the older respondents. More older respondents were members of library organizations. More respondents from the National Capital and the Visayas regions were members of library organizations. More respondents who attended seminar-workshops came from Mindanao and the Visayas than from Luzon.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">A large number who had not read journals in librarianship came from the Mindanao region. The biggest group that claimed they read journals were from Luzon. Those who did not conduct staff meetings were mostly from the Luzon region. Those who conducted staff meetings were mostly from Mindanao.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The monthly salary tended to be higher the longer the professional experience. Those with longer years of experience as a library professional were mostly the ones who had attended seminar-workshops. Majority of the respondents with library science background either worked as teachers or belonged to the non-teaching staff.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">A big number of respondents who took some courses in library management had also teaching responsibilities. Those who read journals in librarianship also attended seminar-workshops in library management. Reading journals in librarianship correlated with attendance in seminar-workshops in library management. Enrollment in some library management courses was correlated with attendance in seminar-workshops. Conduct of staff meetings was correlated with attendance in seminar-workshops. The big number of respondents who took library management courses mostly read journals on librarianship. A big proportion of respondents who conducted staff meetings also took courses in library management.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The older the respondents, the more they saw themselves immediately targeting areas for change as a new administrator. Majority of the respondents from all the regions agreed that they maintained open, candid communication with their subordinates. Respondents with academic background in library science were found to agree with the management practice of involving subordinates in decision making. Those who received lower salaries tended to value their first impressions of staff regardless of improvement of their performances.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The study recommends that theological librarians improve their management and technical skills to help create a more professional image and to extend more effective information service by seeking further training in librarianship. Organizations like the Philippine Theological Library Associations and the Philippine Association of Bible and Theological Schools should be able to offer the training needs sought by the respondents. The theological librarians themselves should have the initiative to seek further training on the skill they feel less competent and school officials should do their part by planning and encouraging their continuing education and training.</subfield>
