This study is about the student use-patterns of the resources and services of the Filipiniana Section of the Ateneo de Manila University Rizal Library. Specifically, the study sought to find out how the students evaluate the sources of information available in the Filipiniana Section ; to find out which of the services offered by the Section are mostly used by students ; to find out how students evaluate the Filipiniana staff members on competence, traits, and attitudes. The study also attempted to make recommendations that would help improve the resources and services of the Filipiniana Section. Using a descriptive survey approach, the questionnaire was used as the data gathering tool. Data gathering was done by getting a representative sample of the Ateneo University School of Arts and Sciences population. Ten percent of the said population or total enrollment (394) were asked to fill up the questionnaire. The distribution was done at random for two consecutive weeks. An equal distribution or representation from the year levels including the graduate students were considered. The study shows that the students appear to use the Filipiniana Section extensively and that it is one of the more vital sections of the Rizal Library. The students who learned about the existence of the Section through freshmen orientation were composed mostly of undergraduate students while the majority of the graduate students answered that they came across this Section of the Library accidentally. Students needed information to meet their course requirements. The majority of them need and demand the following from the Filipiniana Section : journals, periodicals, newspapers, and books published recently. On the other hand, most of the students were found to have positive attitudes towards the Filipiniana Section, perceiving the collection to be adequate and the available services to be satisfactory. The staff members were rated positively, extending sevices satisfactorily. In view of these findings, it is recommended that further studies be done not only in terms of comparing the responses by year level in a similar study, but also considering other related components e.g., comparison of respondents' use and evaluation of the sources and services by gender. The Section should also acquire more materials in various disciplines to strengthen and support the Section's collection and services. It should also continue to provide research/finding aids for the purpose of facilitating information retrieval. A bulletin board should also be put up to announce the availability of materials on local current issue for the information and awareness of the students and other researchers. The Section may also expand the use of computers in its services to allow faster retrieval of information about library materials. The print out of the indexes would also save time and effort and allow more students to use the computers. The physical lay-out of the Section should also be reviewed, perhaps by re-arranging furniture, shelves, tables, etc., to make it more conducive to learning and research activities. Library orientation should also be conducted for the graduate students. Further training through seminars and workshop must be conducted to help staff members who deal with clients in the service area to become more friendly and accomodating. Studies such as this should be done regularly to continuously evaluate and thereby upgrade the resources and services of the Filipiniana Section. Ateneo de Manila University. Rizal Library.
