<subfield code="a">This study surveyed the status of resource sharing among the science and technology (S & T) libraries in Metro Manila and looked into its special implications for similar activities in Nepal. Out of 60 libraries, only 23 comprised the sample which includes 16 government libraries, five private corporation libraries and two regional or international libraries.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">A total of 141 library staff members serve these 23 libraries, each of which have at least one professional librarian. Of the 91 professional librarians, 59 answered the attitude survey questionnaires. Twelve of the libraries are under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The other government libraries are attached to the Bureau of Mines and Geo-Sciences, Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Trade and Industry. The five other libraries are from government or private corporations, while the two international libraries are attached to International Center for Living Aquatic Resource Management (ICLARM) and the World Health Organization (WHO).</subfield>

<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Two sets of questionnaires, were administered in June and July 1987. Simple statistical methods (percentage, mean, standard deviation and analysis of variance) were applied in the analysis of the data.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The findings of the study showed that the libraries surveyed are mutually involved in scientific and technological information (STI) resource sharing activities. Most of the collections (95 percent) are in the English language. Their collections grow comparatively faster at an average of 20 percent per year.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The International Center for Living Aquatic Resource Management (ICLARM) Library, Philippine Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Library, Scientific Clearing House and Documentation Services Division (SCHDSD) and National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) libraries have strong library resources. Some libraries, Food & Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Philippine Council for Health Research & Development (PCHRD), Philippine Invention Development Institute (PIDI) and Technology Livelihood & Resource Center (TLRC) Libraries are deficient in information material resources, but they are strong in specialized information dissemination activities.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The library collections are organized according to standard classification schemes, with 16 libraries (69.5 percent) using the Library of Congress (LC) Classification scheme; and 19 libraries (82.6 percent) follow Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second edition (AACR2). The ICLARM, TIIC, TLRC and WHO libraries have developed their specialized classification schemes. Almost all the libraries utilize computer facilities; 14 libraries have their own computers. SCHSD provides computer database to all Department of Science & Technology (DOST) libraries. The DOST libraries input data about their collections and SCHDSD circulates union cataloging and other bibliographic information. The National Information System for Science & Technology (NISST) network operates under formal or informal agreements with most of the science and technology libraries.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Majority of the libraries have budgets of more than one hundred thousand pesos (P 100,000.00). More than fifty percent of the budget is allocated to the acquisition of library materials. The library users include students and researchers from inside and outside the library organizations. In general all the libraries are hospitable to outside users.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Almost all the respondent librarians have library science educational background. Out of 59 professionals, 54 have taken library science as a major subject in college. They are young and most of them between the ages 30 to 40 years and have library work experience from 5 to 10 years.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The comments and suggestions of the librarians reveal that they are really interested in information resource sharing and they want to strengthen their libraries through computerization. The finding of this study can provide useful guidelines in STI resource sharing for the S & T libraries in a developing country like Nepal. STI resource sharing is a very vital factor in the development of library system and services in developing countries. The SCHDSD (as well as the national network, NISST) TLRC and ICLARM are library models; the promotional activities and information flow among the other specialized libraries, are very helpful in planning the development of library resources and services for new S & T libraries in the countryside and this experiences are suitable for similar activities in Nepal.</subfield>
