The purpose of this study is to describe the nature and extent of cooperative activities among agricultural research libraries within the AARD, and to identify the problems and factors that hinder or promote cooperation among these libraries. Questionnaire was used to gather data from the twenty seven agricultural research libraries under the AARD. The questionnaire elicited answers as to status of each library in terms of staff, collection, services and facilities. It also explored the extent of library cooperation among these libraries and the role of the NLAS in coordinating the various types of cooperative activities. Frequency distribution and percentages were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that research fields for which the agricultural research libraries serve covered agricultural data processing, and researches in agro-economic, soil, food crops, horticulture, industrial crops, animal science, fisheries, and estate crops. All the agricultural research libraries surveyed are engaged in some form of cooperative programs, particularly acquisition of books and periodicals, interlibrary loan and exchange of publications. Most of the cooperative activities which started as early as 1975 were carried out on a formal basis. Furthermore, interlibrary loans were effected only among small number of libraries within the same region, more particularly by those within a closely-related subject. To avoid difficulties in dispatch and returning loaned materials, more libraries espoused the photocopying service rather than lending the original materials. The study recommends that a union catalog which covers the entire collection of all agricultural research libraries within the AARD should be organized as soon as possible, and that all the libraries concerned should participate seriously. Moreover, to accelerate the development of research institutes' libraries and to solve the problem of lack of manpower, the NLAS should continue to intensify the upgrading of the education of library personnel working in the research institutes, and be more aggressive in its program of supervising and coordinating the library cooperative activities among the agricultural research libraries. Finally, the Library Committee should be more active and sensitive towards library problems and the librarians should be given more opportunities for participation. Agricultural libraries Indonesia.
