It also provides guidelines for incorporating IPM in agriculture projects in relation to the project cycle, and for developing and implementing IPM in a given situation. The primary purpose of this Handbook is to enable Bank staff to make a preliminary evaluation of an investment project, usually at the technical assistance (TA) fact-finding stage, to determine whether a more detailed study is warranted. This Handbook is also intended for development institutions, non-government organiztions (NGOs), and bilateral and multilateral organizations." The Handbook is consist of two parts : the first part presents the purpose of the Handbook, establishes the Bank's position on IPM, outlines the historical development of the use of the pesticides and their problems, and elaborates on the need, achievements, benefits, and future of IPM. It also elucidates the general principles of IPM and the attributes for its successful development and implementation, and proceeds to apply these at each stage of project processing. The second part consists of appendixes that provide detailed information that may be required by Bank staff and others wanting to know more about IPM. A list of selected IPM-related references and glossary are also included.
