Most or probably all universities face the challenge of eliminating or minimizing the operational and software costs of library systems. The good news is that in the University of the Philippines, the UPCLS2 has thought of a great alternative of providing a library system almost free of charge from its deployment to its maintenance. A computerized library system running on a free environment is introduced. Extending the UPCLS, the system can be divided into 3 basic modules: the main module which consists of Cataloging, Acquisitions, Circulations, Serial Collections and Searching or Online Public Access Catalog; the Web-OPAC; and the Mobile-OPAC. Its databases are distributed. This means that database on a particular library unit is independent of one another, thus making it possible for the system to continue its operation even if a failure would exist in one of its databases. The second module, the Web-OPAC, is a tool used for searching library materials and making library transactions through any computer with ready internet access. The third module is Mobile-OPAC which provide searching and transacting even on the streets with the use of Java(TM)-enabled phones and Palmtops. Despite database independence, the system is not limited on accessing a single database only but also capable of cross-database searching and transacting.
