   <subfield code="a">The problems encountered in retrospective conversion by the libraries were : lack of trained staff, hardware breakdown, inadequate system support, inadequate management support, insufficient hardware, rapid staff turn over and lack of funds. Most of the cataloging projects were funded by the college/university administration.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">The purpose of this study was to document the various experiences of selected academic and special libraries in Metro Manila in converting from a manual to an automated system of cataloging and to prepare case studies for three of the libraries in the survey. The descriptive survey method was used with the questionnaire as a data-gathering tool for the survey while interview and observation were used for the case study.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">The respondents of this study were the chief librarians and heads of the cataloging sections of 13 academic and four special libraries in Metro Manila. Of the 34 librarians surveyed only 31 responded. All the respondents preferred automated cataloging to manual cataloging. They found access and retrieval easier and faster, in an automated catalog. This increase resulted in a decrease in cataloging time and therefore, more outputs with fewer backlogs. All the libraries surveyed, except one maintained their card catalog for back-up purposes in case of power failure. One of the libraries kept its old catalog but no longer maintained it when the OPAC was put in place.</subfield>

  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">The three libraries chosen for the studies were the University of the Philippines College of Engineering, and the Don Bosco Technical College from the academic libraries group and the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management from the special libraries group. UPCE used TINLIB, DBTC used DBEIS and ICLARM used CDS/ISIS, in a LAN environment and have had many years of experience in using it. Each one had different implementation policies and procedures. The ICLARM represented typical library settings in the Pilippines since CDS/ISIS is the most commonly used software in Philippine libraries an therefore the cases presented in this study could prove useful for libraries about to embark on similar projects.</subfield>
