TY - THES T1 - Effects of individualized menstrual cycle-based resistance training periodization on exercise performance outputs A1 - Reyes, Camille Elizabeth C. A2 - Valleser, Christian Wisdom M. MSHMS LA - English UL - https://tuklas.up.edu.ph/Record/UP-8027390931316765940 AB - This study aimed to analyze the impact of individualized resistance training periodized according to menstrual cycle phases on exercise performance outputs among young eumenorrheic women, aged 18–30 years, who have regularly participated in resistance training and have not taken any oral or hormonal contraceptives over the past six months. Participants completed a 6-week intervention with a week allotted both before and after the intervention to measure for improvements in thigh muscle circumference and five repetition maximum of the barbell back squat exercise. Statistical analysis of results will be done by using paired t-tests and ANOVA. The findings of the study revealed that all three training periodization showed significant improvements in both left and right thigh girth measurements, 5-RM Squat, and Estimated 1-RM Squat, with only the 5-RM Squat and Estimated 1-RM Squat having significant between group differences favoring the menstrual cycle-based periodizations. This concludes that both menstrual cycle-based periodization and traditional undulating periodization are effective in achieving increases in muscle hypertrophy and maximal strength. Therefore, any of the periodizations may be applied for female athletes to see improvements in exercise adaptations. However, the follicular phase-based training was noted to have larger effect size in thigh girth and significant between group differences in maximal strength compared to both groups, which may be attributed to a hormonal advantage that the periodization gives for participants. Thus, a menstrual cycle-based periodization may be prescribed for female athletes with cycle-related or hormonal concerns in order to regulate endogenous hormones to prevent muscle loss and strength decline in the long run.
