Through an anonymous online interview, Jared narrates the story of how his SOGIE developed from elementary to college, and how external factors like religion and homophobia forced him to repress his truth. He also shares his experiences being in the closet, his view on coming out, and his journey to self-acceptance. This film utilizes the theories of phenomenology, narratology, and queer theory combining dance, animation, and cinematic techniques to depict the story of a closeted person without forcing them to come out. Phenomenology is the study of an individual’s experience, narratology guides the storytelling of the film, and queer theory grounds the film’s essence and purpose. By nature, this film is about the lived experiences of a closeted queer person, so combining these theories in creating the moving images and treatment representative of Jared’s experiences give depth to the film’s meaning. Jared’s story is portrayed through incorporating digitally manipulated photos of him from real life with shot footage and dance numbers representing the emotions he felt during specific stages of his life.
