   <subfield code="a">There is considerable investment interest in the healthcare industry with the government prioritization of Private Public Partnership for Health as well as the establishment of PEZA and TIEZA incentives for medical tourism. However, there is insufficient research on financial performance indicators for the Philippine hospital industry. The present study did a financial ratio analysis of ten top performer hospitals engaged in Medical Tourism from 2004-2010. It seeks to complement the study of De la Pena, et al (Dela Pena, Lawas, Sison, 2005) which looked at the financial performance of Philippine hospitals from up to 2003.&#13;

A Descriptive-Analytical design with Financial Ratio Analysis was used to assess the financial performance of the selected hospitals. These ten hospitals were selected because of their history of being targets of investment interest, as well as being leading players in medical tourism. The ten hospitals included in the study were St. Luke's Medical Center, The Medical City, Makati Medical Center, Asian Hospital, Manila Doctors Hospital, Capitol Medical Center, Medical Center Manila, United Doctors Medical Center, Chinese General Hospital and Cardinal Santos Medical Center. These ten hospitals were segregated into two groups based on Revenue Performance. The High Revenue (Top Four) Hospitals were St. Luke's Medical Center (SLMC), The Medical City (TMC), Makati Medical Center (MMC) and Asian Hospital Inc. (AHI), with 2010 Combined Revenues of PHP14 billion. Individual Hospital Revenue was at least PHP 1.7 billion a year to a national top revenue for a hospital of PHP 4.8 billion for St. Luke's. The Medium Revenue (Bottom 6) hospitals combined for 2010 Revenues of PHP 4 billion with individual hospital revenues ranging from PHP 14 Million to 1.4 Billion.&#13;

The top four hospitals had a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10%, while the bottom 6 hospitals had a CAGR of 4%. Over all, the selected hospitals exhibited a CAGR or 8%. The highest market share is SLMC at an average of 28% of total subject group revenue; next are MMC and TMC at 17-18%; lowest share are United Doctors' Medical Center (UDMC) and Capitol Medical Center (CMC) at 1-2%. Gross Profit Margin averaged at 27% for all hospitals. The Top 4 were consistently within the 28-30% Gross Profit Margin range. Of the less performing hospitals, only Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) hurdled the 30% benchmark. Operating Profit Margin average at 27% for all hospitals. The Top 4 performers were consistently above 30% in Operating Profit Margins. Only MDH had Operating Profit Margins above 30%. Net Profit Margin averaged at 6% for all hospitals studied. The Net Profit Margin leader is SLMC while AHI, MCM and UDMC are negative.&#13;

The study recommends that further studies correlate yearly financial performance against operational performance per hospital, as well as do a Trend Analysis with year-on-year financial evaluation against year-on-year operational performance per hospital over the same study period.</subfield>
