   <subfield code="a">Photoperiod is the recurrent cycle of light and dark periods.  In fishes, the time of reproduction is governed by an endogenous specific rhythm later synchronized by external factors, mainly photoperiod.  It also influences the biology as well as the behavior of many teleost larvae juveniles., This study was conducted to determine the growth and survival of purebred and hybrid Clarias sp. larvae exposed to different light regimes (24L/OD, 18L/6D, 12L/12D, 6L/18D and OL/24D) from hatching to metamorphosis. Two experiments were done, one for the purebred larvae (Calrias gariepinus (male) X Clarias gariepinus (female); and the other for the hybrid (Clarias macrocephalus (male C Clarias gariepinus (female).  In each experiment, the survival and growth rates were obtained for 14 days and one-month period, respectively. Results showed that 24L/OD or continuos lighting supported the highest survival rate (93.33% in hybrid and 53.44% in purebred) and highest growth rate (14.43mm MBL in purebred and 13.67mm MBL in hybrid).  However, statistically, it showed no significant difference was also observed between purebred and hybrid larvae in terms of growth and survival rates.</subfield>
