   <subfield code="a">Endophytic fungi, especially from host plants of high priority screening (such as medicinal plants and plants with unique adaptations to survive), are top targets for bioprospecting beneficial secondary metabolites. Endophytic fungi were isolated from four mangrove hosts along Iloilo River: Avicennia officinalis, Avidennia rumphiana, Heretiera litoralis, and Xylocarpus granatum. Ten dominant fungal isolates were chosen for preliminary screening of antimicrobial properties against bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas auruginosa, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus) and one fungus (Candida albicans) Among the tested isolates, only one isolate (Aspergillus candidus) exhibited potential and proceeded for further testing. The fungus was grown in liquid medium (PD Broth) for one week and the filtrate was concentrated using ethyl acetate as a diluents. The disk diffusion assay was used to test the crude extract at varying concentrations (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%) and compared with positive and negative controls. This paper reports that the crude extract exhibited weak inhibitory activity against E. coli compared with the activity of the positive control. However, there is a need to isolate and test more fungal endophytes from other Philippines mangroves for their potential to produce more potent antimicrobial.</subfield>
